The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Stanley Leith (NSN: 0-58093), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Mine Division and as Second-in-Command of the minesweeping units attached to the Amphibious Force of the South Pacific Force during the original occupation, reinforcement and supply of Guadalcanal Island on 7 August 1942. In the face of persistent bombardment by enemy shore batteries, Lieutenant Commander Leith, in the initial attack on the island, skillfully conducted a group of ships which contributed vital support to the landing of troops by their effective gunfire. During the same operations Lieutenant Commander Leith further proved his brilliant professional ability while in charge of a minesweeping unit performing essential minesweeping duties under enemy fire. He later distinguished himself by the highly efficient manner in which he participated in numerous escort missions into the Guadalcanal-Tulagi Area, despite hostile air attacks upon his flagship. Lieutenant Commander Leith’s excellent judgment and unswerving devotion to duty were of great material assistance to the success of our forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Second Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain Stanley Leith (NSN: 0-58093), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander Amphibious Forces, Pacific Fleet, from 9 September 1943 to 20 July 1945. During this period Captain Leith pioneered in the development of new doctrines and techniques for the amphibious invasions of enemy-held territory. He prepared detailed plans for the organization, assembly, and movement of all amphibious assault shipping to the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Mariana Islands, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa Gunto. At these objectives he directed the movements of all assault and re-supply shipping; he was responsible for the development of basic policies of organization and training for the ships of the amphibious forces and he originated and assisted in executing plans for their successful employment. His exceptional talent for detail and timing contributed immeasurably to the success of the above-mentioned amphibious operations. His personal courage, determination in the face of the enemy and outstanding leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Commander Amphibious Forces Pacific: Serial 1461 (September 20, 1945)The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain Stanley Leith (NSN: 0-58093), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander Amphibious Forces, United States Pacific Fleet, during operations against enemy Japanese forces from November 1944 to May 1945. During this period, Captain Leith ably assisted in the planning and participated in the capture of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Charged with directing operations for counteracting enemy action at the objective, and for rescuing personnel from damaged and sunken ships, he discharged his responsibilities with professional skill and courage despite fierce and determined resistance and heavy hostile aerial attack. His forceful leadership, capable direction and devotion to duty throughout these hazardous campaigns reflect the highest credit upon Captain Leith and the United States Naval Service. Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 326 (May 1944)The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain Stanley Leith (NSN: 0-58093), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commander of a Mine Squadron from February to July 1943. Captain Leith covered the movement of ships and troops into Kula Gulf and the Solomon Islands Area. Despite repeated attacks by the enemy from the air, sea and shore, he completed his missions and retired without loss or damage.
