The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Joseph Leer LaCombe (NSN: 0-73646), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving aboard the U.S.S. PECOS (AO-6), on 1 March 1942. As Anti-Aircraft Control Officer, his courage, alertness, and leadership, kept the anti-aircraft firing at each Japanese plane as it dived over the ship. The Anti-Aircraft Control Party was in a very exposed position over the bridge and it was through the alertness of the Control Party that the approach of most of the planes was noted and word given to the guns, in order that they could commence firing as soon as within range. When casualties reduced the crews of the anti-aircraft guns on the wings of the upper bridge he assisted as necessary in order that they might continue firing. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
