The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant [then Lieutenant, Junior Grade] William Harlough Knull, Jr. (NSN: 0-283468), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Torpedo Data Computer Operator of the U.S.S. APOGON (SS-308), during the SEVENTH War Patrol of that Submarine in the Kuri Islands Area from 28 May to 14 July 1945. Expertly operating the Torpedo Data Computer, Lieutenant Knull rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting gun and torpedo attacks to sink and damage over 12,000 tons of enemy shipping despite severe enemy countermeasures. His skill and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
