The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain William Talty Kenny (NSN: 0-60416), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. JUNEAU, Commander of a Task Group for the Patrol of the Formosa Strait, and as a Commander of a Task Group for gunfire support while participating with United States Naval Forces in actions against the enemy during the period from 19 July 1950 to 18 April 1951. While operating on the coasts of Korea, the U.S.S. JUNEAU bombarded and furnished effective and accurate gunfire support which assisted our forces in launching a major sustained offensive. Gunnery missions were conducted on short notice and a commendable state of readiness was maintained at all times. All missions were executed expeditiously and efficiently without material or personnel casualties. Captain Kenny’s inspiring leadership, keen foresight, and professional ability were directly responsible for the excellent state of morale and high degree of combat efficiency attained by the offices and men under his command, thereby contributing materially to the success of our operations against the enemy. His distinguished performance throughout the Korean War reflected the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. (Captain Kenny is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
