The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign Donald William Kennedy (NSN: 0-389717), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action aboard the U.S.S. FRANKLIN (CV-13) while leading a group of men in fighting a fire resulting from enemy action on 30 October 1944. Without regard for his own safety, he directed and participated in the prompt removal of acetylene cylinders and smoke tanks from an area enveloped in flames.
