The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Edward Dean Spruance, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during a war patrol in enemy-controlled waters in World War II. Through his outstanding ability in analyzing the torpedo problem, Lieutenant Commander Spruance, as Assistant Approach Officer of a United States Submarine during prolonged successful activities against enemy shipping, was of inestimable service in sinking four hostile ships and damaging others. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
