The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) Roy Clark Wigley, United States Army Air Forces, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while participating as pilot of a fighter-bomber type aircraft of the 531st Bombardment Squadron, SEVENTH Air Force, during a bombardment mission over enemy territory on 18 January 1944. Lieutenant Colonel Wigley led his squadron over an enemy target in the Central Pacific area it the face of intense antiaircraft fire and pressed the attack on enemy installations. The aircraft of which he was pilot was struck by antiaircraft fire at the end of his bombing dive and the plane continued on to crash and burst into flames. The remainder of the squadron which he led in the attack successfully dropped their bombs on the target and returned to their base. The successful completion of the squadron’s mission was due to the inspired leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Wigley. Throughout this combat operation he displayed his professional skill, courage, and devotion to duty which reflected great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army Air Forces.
