The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Commander Harry Reid Hummer, Jr. (NSN: 0-61177), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. McLANAHAN. With exceptional skill and inventiveness, Commander Hummer developed and put in practice a special device for the training of operators of submarine sound detection apparatus aboard ship. By his keen initiative and tireless efforts he made a valuable contribution to the anti-submarine warfare activities of the United States Navy.
