Commander 7th Fleet: Serial 0629 (February 9, 1945)The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain [then Commander] Miles Hunter Hubbard (NSN: 0-61454), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. CLAXTON (DD-571), during operations in Leyte Gulf and Surigao Strait, Philippine Islands, from 19 to 25 October 1944. Participating in the occupation of Leyte as a unit of the fire support and bombardment group, Captain Hubbard skillfully directed his ship in the successful performance of screening duties in dangerous waters despite heavy enemy mortar fire and air attacks. Engaging major units of the Japanese Fleet during the Battle of Surigao Strait on 25 October, he, without serious damage to his own ship, contributed materially to the defeat of the enemy Fleet. By his outstanding leadership, perseverance and devotion to duty, Captain Hubbard upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain Miles Hunter Hubbard (NSN: 0-61454), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as Commander Destroyer Division NINETY-EIGHT in Western Pacific Waters from 26 November 1944 to 15 August 1945. During this long period of hazardous duty, his initiative, perseverance, and outstanding professional skill, in commanding his Division of Destroyers and also a Task Group composed of Destroyers and Landing Craft, contributed to successful operations against the enemy at Lingayen Gulf and Okinawa. In the face of fanatical opposition by Kamikaze planes, he courageously directed his ships in their fire support, radar picket, and anti-submarine screening duties, during which they inflicted heavy damage to enemy forces until they themselves were either damaged or sunk. His steadfast devotion to duty and loyalty in the face of extreme personal danger proved an inspiration to his officers and men and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Board Serial 446 (June 4, 1962)The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Second Gold Star in addition to a previously awarded Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Legion of Merit to Rear Admiral Miles Hunter Hubbard (NSN: 0-61454), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as Assistant Chief of Naval Operations (Logistics) from August 1960 to June 1962. Exercising marked professional ability and resourcefulness, Rear Admiral Hubbard contributed immeasurably during this period to the effective logistical support and material readiness of the Operating Forces, Reserve Fleets, and Shore Establishment of the Navy. Through his broad operational and logistical background, his thorough understanding of management functions, his keen analytical mind, and his instinctively sound judgment, he provided the essential guidance and coordination of all aspects of the complicated logistical problems and programs within the Naval Establishment, as well as naval responsibilities in joint logistic matters. His wide experience and extensive knowledge and understanding in the field of weapons and weapon systems were strong contributing factors toward ensuring efficient and effective logistic support of the Operating Forces. Rear Admiral Hubbard’s leadership, professional competence, and unswerving devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.

Commander 7th Fleet: Serial 1386 (June 28, 1953)The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain Miles Hunter Hubbard (NSN: 0-61454), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. BREMERTON (CA-130) and as Commander of numerous Task Elements during operations against enemy aggressor forces in Korea, from 1 May to 26 June 1953. Throughout this period, Captain Hubbard effectively directed the Task Units under his command on repeated gun strikes against enemy forces and installations along the east coast of Korea and conducted fire missions in support of friendly forces on the eastern terminus of the front lines. A capable and resourceful officer, he rendered invaluable assistance to the Support Group Commander by establishing and maintaining close liaison with division and corps commanders of front-line troops, which contributed materially to the improvement of gunfire support. Ably maneuvering the forces under his command through restricted waters while subjected to enemy fire, he skillfully controlled and directed their gunfire against enemy fortified positions, inflicting heavy casualties, destroying or damaging hostile installations, seriously interfering with the delivery of enemy shipments of essential supplies and prohibiting the enemy from executing successful attacks against friendly front-line positions. By his expert seamanship, inspiring initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Captain Hubbard contributed immeasurably to the success of the BREMERTON and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
