    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Dean Alden Horn (NSN: 0-282883), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the U.S.S. CARP (SS-338), during the FIRST War Patrol of that Submarine off the east coast of Honshu and Kurile Islands from 8 June to 7 August 1945. As Diving Officer, his careful and precise control of depth were of invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting successful attacks which resulted in the sinking of approximately 10,000 tons of enemy shipping and in damaging over 2,000 tons. His coolness and high devotion to duty contributed directly to the success of his vessel in evading severe enemy countermeasures. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
