Action Date:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Stanley Eugene Hindman (NSN: 0-82665), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in operations against the enemy, while serving aboard the Escort Carrier U.S.S. SANGAMON (CVE-26). On 25 October 1944, when our carriers were under attack by Japanese air and heavy surface units he led fighter planes in a gallant strafing attack against a Japanese battleship with utter disregard for his own safety and by so doing withdrew heavy enemy anti-aircraft fire from the torpedo planes with which he was coordinating his attack. His courageous conduct and his leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
