The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Alvin Robert Hersh, Jr. (NSN: 0-165853), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Torpedo Data Computer Operator of the U.S.S. RAZORBACK (SS-394), during the SECOND War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy Japanese-controlled waters in the Pacific Ocean Area, from 15 November 1944 to 5 January 1945. Skilled in performing his assigned duties, Lieutenant Hersh rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting attacks to sink 20,800 tons and to damage 5,400 tons of enemy shipping. His courage and devotion to duty contributed materially to the successful operations of his submarine and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
