The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] Eugene Adams Hemley (NSN: 0-85361), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Officer in the Torpedo Fire Control Party on board the U.S.S. SEADRAGON (SS-194), during the ELEVENTH War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy Japanese water, from 23 September to 8 November 1944. Assisting his Commanding Officer in conducting successful operations by his sound judgment and coordination of important information, Lieutenant Commander Hemley contributed materially to the sinking of enemy ships totaling over 13,000 tons and the damaging of more than 30,000 tons, and to the success of his vessel in evading hostile countermeasures. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
