The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Frederick E. Harrison, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Corpsman attached to the Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, on Peleliu, Palau Islands. On 22 September 1944, when a Marine, wounded and bleeding severely, lay in the path of heavy machine gun fire, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Harrison dashed into the exposed area and dragged the wounded man through the machine gun fire to the safety of a protected ledge. He quickly administered first aid and dispatched the man to an aid station by stretcher team. As a result of Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Harrison’s prompt and fearless action, undertaken with utter disregard for his own safety, the Marine was saved from bleeding to death. Again on 26 September, at the height of an intense enemy mortar barrage, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Harrison, forsaking cover, moved from man to man continually giving aid. He treated a total of nine casualties, braving heavy sniper fire as well as mortar fire. As darkness had fallen when the mortar barrage ceased and it was impossible to evacuate the wounded, he cared them throughout the night. On these occasions, he showed utter disregard for his own safety and outstanding devotion to duty which were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
