The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Wesley Burton Haggard (NSN: 3720905), United States Navy, for gallantry in action and distinguished service in the line of his profession while serving as a Corpsman attached to the FIRST Marine Division on the northern coast of Guadalcanal Island on 10 August 1942. While a member of a patrol advancing through enemy territory, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Haggard, with utter disregard for his own personal safety fearlessly faced the accurate rifle fire of numerous enemy snipers to treat the wounds of incapacitated Marines. Largely as a result of his valorous action the lives of several of the wounded were saved, and he set a fine example of courage to the members of his company. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
