The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class William A. Hagemann (NSN: 6121585), United States Navy, for gallantry in action on 20 January 1943, while serving as a Corpsman attached to the SECOND Marine Division at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. Pharmacist’s Mate Hageman accompanied a combat patrol which was operating in a sector of open grassy ridges, deep ravines and dense jungles. The patrol was subjected to enemy machine gun and rifle fire as it advanced. In the engagement that ensued four members of the patrol were wounded. Without regard to the danger, Pharmacist’s Mate Hageman made his way to the wounded to render first aid. He also assisted other patrol members in removing the wounded to safety. This undertaking required movement through enemy mortar and machine gun fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
