The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Commander [then Lieutenant Commander] James Robert Grey (NSN: 0-78836), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer Escort U.S.S. LAWRENCE C. TAYLOR (DE-415), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Pacific War Area on 15 July 1945. Upon receiving information that a hostile submarine had been sighted by friendly planes sixty-seven miles away, Commander Grey maneuvered his ship to the scene and, immediately obtaining contact, carried out an aggressive attack to damage and probably destroy the enemy vessel. His leadership, outstanding seamanship and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Commander Grey and the United States Naval Service. (Commander Grey is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
