The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Norman Dwight Gage (NSN: 0-74901), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the U.S.S. TAUTOG (SS-199), during a War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy controlled waters during World War II. As Diving Officer, his careful and precise control of depth were of invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting successful attacks which resulted in the sinking of six enemy ships, including three submarines. His coolness and high devotion to duty contributed directly to the success of his vessel in evading severe enemy countermeasures. His courage throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
