The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Clark Halsey Fuller, Jr. (NSN: 0-81367), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy in the U.S.S. SAURY (SS-189), during the SIXTH War Patrol of that Submarine in the East China Sea from 7 May 1943 to 7 June 1943. As Torpedo and Gunnery Officer, his excellent supervision of personnel and their maintenance of torpedo and gunnery equipment, and efficient direction of torpedo reloads during attacks, contributed materially to the success of his vessel in sinking three enemy ships totaling approximately 25,000 tons. His coolness and high devotion to duty contributed directly to the success of his vessel in evading severe enemy countermeasures. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
