The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Commander Edward Lee Foster (NSN: 0-70334), United States Navy, for meritorious service as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer Minelayer U.S.S. SHANNON (DD-737), during operations against enemy Japanese forcers in the vicinity of Okinawa, on 3 May 1945. When a friendly destroyer was severely damaged by enemy suicide planes, Commander Foster skillfully navigated his ship to the stricken vessel and, despite numerous enemy aircraft in the area, towed her safely back to port. By his courage and determination in the completion of his mission, he aided materially in saving the ship. His leadership throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Commander Foster is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
