The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Benjamin Prince Field, Jr. (NSN: 0-70270), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. BOYLE (DD-600), during the amphibious invasion of Southern France between 18 and 30 August 1944. Commander Field skillfully maneuvered and directed the gunfire of his ship to provide effective support for the advancing ground forces to clear the enemy from coastal positions on the right flank of the central assault area. His expert and vigorous conduct of shore bombardment missions despite strong return fire from coastal defenses was instrumental in the silencing of several enemy shore batteries, the saturation of enemy troop and tank concentrations and the harassing of interior supply lines. In effect, the able participation of his command in this continuous action over an extended period of time materially assisted in the expulsion of the enemy from Southern France. The exceptional ability, prompt and aggressive action under enemy fire, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Commander Field were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
