The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander William Archer Dunn, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. DAVIS (DD-395), in the Area Screen of the Naval Western Task Force, in active operations against the enemy in the Bay of Seine, France, from 7 to 15 June 1944. A skilled and inspiring leader, Commander Dunn efficiently directed the activities of his ship in providing the maximum protection for the vessels in the Western Task Force Area from German surface forces and submarines. Effectively supervising his vessel’s anti-aircraft facilities, he assisted materially in repulsing enemy air attacks. By his professional ability, aggressiveness and unswerving devotion to duty, Commander Dunn contributed essentially to the success of our operations in the area, and his exemplary conduct throughout upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
