The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant John Bauman Dudley, Jr. (NSN: 0-82568), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Gunnery and Assistant Approach Officer of the U.S.S. HADDOCK (SS-231) during the FIRST and SECOND War Patrols of that Submarine in enemy Japanese-controlled waters from 28 July to 4 December 1942. By his cool, deliberate and accurate interpretation of firing data, Lieutenant Dudley rendered invaluable assistance during eight attacks on enemy ships, in which six of their vessels, amounting to 48,333 tons, were sunk and two severely damaged. His calm and quiet leadership while in battle and his conduct throughout the approaches were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Commander Submarine Forces Pacific: Serial 095 (February 4, 1946)The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Commander John Bauman Dudley, Jr. (NSN: 0-82568), United States Navy, for meritorious service as Assistant Approach Officer on the U.S.S. ATULE (SS-403), during the FOURTH War Patrol of that Submarine in the vicinity of Nanpo Shoto, from 3 July to 25 August 1945. By his excellent judgment and thorough knowledge of attack problems, Lieutenant Commander Dudley assisted his Commanding Officer in conducting successful attacks which resulted in the sinking and damaging of approximately 2,000 tons of enemy shipping. By his professional ability, courage and devotion to duty, he contributed directly to the success of his vessel in evading enemy countermeasures, and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
