The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Michael A. Drahush, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy while serving as a Corpsman attached to a Marine Battalion of the FIFTH Marine Division on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 6 March 1945. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Drahush, with the aid of another Pharmacist’s Mate went forward of the front lines under heavy mortar and sniper fire, disregarding his own safety to render first aid to a wounded man. The two Pharmacist’s Mates while under fire gave treatment to the man, then evacuated him to safety thus saving his life. His courageous conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
