The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] Judson Charles Doyle (NSN: 0-123708), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Gunnery Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. DALY (DD-519), in action against major units of the Japanese Fleet during the Battle of Surigao Strait, Philippine Islands, 25 October 1944. Skillfully directing the gun batteries during the engagement, Lieutenant Commander Doyle contributed materially to the success of his ship in inflicting serious damage on an enemy cruiser, which exploded and was later destroyed by our heavy units. He was also instrumental in scoring hits on other warships and a destroyer, and his courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
