The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Albert William Dickinson (NSN: 0-74152), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while acting as Assistant Sky Control Officer aboard the U.S.S. NORTHAMPTON (CA-26), during the engagement with Japanese naval forces near Savo Island on the night of 30 November 1942. When his ship was severely damaged and set afire, Lieutenant Dickinson volunteered to direct operations of a hose against the flames in close proximity to exploding ammunition. He maintained his hazardous station with complete disregard for his own safety, and his gallant conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
