The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] Harry Ellsworth Davey, Jr. (NSN: 0-82480), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Torpedo Data Computer Operator of the U.S.S. HERRING (SS-233), during the SIXTH War Patrol of that Submarine from 15 November 1943 to 8 January 1944. Efficiently discharging his assigned duties, Lieutenant Commander Davey contributed directly to the success of his vessel in sinking four enemy ships totaling 30,027 tons and in damaging a 7,000-ton hostile vessel. Cool and efficient in the face of enemy counterattacks he aided his Commanding Officer in conducting successful evasive tactics. His professional ability, courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Lieutenant Commander Davey and the United States Naval Service.
