The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Robert Elwin Cutts (NSN: 0-81214), United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy in the line of his profession as Torpedo and Gunnery Officer in the U.S.S. SALMON (SS-182), during four war patrols of that Submarine in enemy controlled waters. As Officer-of-the-Deck, on one occasion, he ably maneuvered his boat to intercept an enemy cruiser and during the subsequent approach he skillfully operated the data computer, thereby directly aiding in the sinking of an enemy cruiser. His gallant action and outstanding performance of duty have contributed in large measure to the success of his submarine against enemy shipping. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
