The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Emory C. Crowder, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Corpsman with Company I, Third Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against the enemy on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 8 July 1944. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Crowder administered first aid to fifteen casualties while under heavy enemy rifle fire. Although painfully wounded in the eye, he kept to his task and refused medical attention for himself until all casualties had been evacuated. His daring and valiant conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
