(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Captain Russell Sydnor Crenshaw, Jr. (NSN: 0-100390), United States Navy, was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Military Assistant to the Director of Defense Research and Engineering, from August 1964 through September 1967.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Russell Sydnor Crenshaw, Jr. (NSN: 0-100390), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Executive Officer and Special Equipment Evaluator of the Destroyer U.S.S. MAURY (DD-401) operating as a unit of a Task Force which engaged the Japanese forces in Vella Gulf, British Solomon Islands on the night of 6 August 1943. Lieutenant Crenshaw, by his skillful control of the special equipment and accurate appraisal of the data obtained there from, provided his Commanding Officer with information necessary for the success of the engagement. His courageous conduct and outstanding performance of duty materially aided in the sinking of one enemy cruiser and three destroyers and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
