The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Russell Sydnor Crenshaw, Jr. (NSN: 0-100390), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Executive Officer and Special Equipment Evaluator of the Destroyer U.S.S. MAURY (DD-401) operating as a unit of a Task Force which engaged the Japanese forces in Vella Gulf, British Solomon Islands on the night of 6 August 1943. Lieutenant Crenshaw, by his skillful control of the special equipment and accurate appraisal of the data obtained there from, provided his Commanding Officer with information necessary for the success of the engagement. His courageous conduct and outstanding performance of duty materially aided in the sinking of one enemy cruiser and three destroyers and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
