The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Irwin Chase, Jr. (NSN: 0-71452/1310), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Navigator of the U.S.S. TICONDEROGA (CV-14), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Formosa, on 21 January 1945. Demonstrating outstanding seamanship, Commander Chase took over the conn of the ship after the Captain and Executive Officer were severely wounded during an enemy air attack. With fires raging and ammunition exploding in the island structure and flight and hangar decks, he skillfully maneuvered the TICONDEROGA in repelling succeeding enemy air attacks, performing his duties from the bridge for over twenty-four hours without relief. By his leadership, courage and tactical skill, Commander Chase upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
