The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant (MC) James E. Cashman, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving as Medical Officer aboard the U.S.S. CUSHING (DD-376) during action against Japanese naval forces off Savo Island on the night of 12 – 13 November 1942. Lieutenant Cashman bravely continued to administer to wounded personnel and assisted in their evacuation, although he himself was injured and the ship was under heavy hostile bombardment. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
