The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander [then Lieutenant Commander] Freeland Harold Carde, Jr. (NSN: 0-81285), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. WHALE (SS-239), during the ELEVENTH War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy Japanese-controlled waters south of Bungo Suido, from 15 June to 25 August 1945. Efficiently coordinating his approach with covering aircraft, Commander Carde rescued fifteen Army and Navy aviation personnel, evaded all enemy countermeasures and returned his ship safe to port. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
