The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Guy Cane (NSN: 0-7187243), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Fighter Squadron FIFTY-THREE (VF-53), embarked in the U.S.S. BON HOMME RICHARD (CVA-31), as Pilot of jet aircraft during combat operations against North Vietnam. On 29 July 1968, Commander Cane led a flight of four fighters which engaged four MiG-17 aircraft in low altitude, high speed aerial combat. Demonstrating the highest degree of aggressiveness and superb airmanship, Commander Cane skillfully led his Division in a brilliant attack on four enemy MiG-17 aircraft. Commander Cane had descended his flight to tree top level through an area heavily defended, in order to achieve tactical surprise. Withy complete disregard for his own personal safety, Commander Cane courageously pressed the boldly planned and executed attack with such skill, aggressiveness, and determination that he destroyed one MiG-17. Through his daring planning and leadership, superb airmanship and loyal devotion to duty, Commander Cane upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
