The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander (MC) Emmett L. Calhoun, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Officer, aboard the U.S.S. NORTHAMPTON (CA-26), 16 to 27 October 1942, in the Solomon Islands. Commander Calhoun insisted on manning his station although weakened by a major emergency operation. He was seriously injured during an attack the next day, but when 114 wounded survivors were brought aboard, he worked tirelessly for four days to relieve their suffering. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
