    Commander Submarine Forces Pacific: Serial 02169 (August 31, 1945)

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Julian Thompson Burke, Jr., United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties aboard the U.S.S. FLYING FISH (SS-229) during a War Patrol of that Submarine during World War II. As Assistant Approach Officer, his excellent judgment and thorough knowledge of attack problems assisted his Commanding Officer considerably in conducting successful attacks which resulted in the sinking and damaging of enemy shipping totaling approximately 3,200 tons. His coolness and high devotion to duty contributed directly to the success of his vessel in evading enemy countermeasures. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
