The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] Davis Eli Bunting (NSN: 0-123694/1100), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Torpedo Data Computer Operator of the U.S.S. ARCHERFISH (SS-311), during the FIFTH War Patrol of that Submarine against enemy Japanese forces in waters south of Honshu, Japan, from 30 October to 15 December 1944. Displaying keen understanding of fire control equipment and proficiency in operating the Torpedo Data Computer, Lieutenant Commander Bunting rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in pressing home daring torpedo attacks against the enemy and, on one occasion, following a six and one-half hour chase, contributed materially to the sinking of a 28,000-ton aircraft carrier of the Hayataka Class. Continuing his valiant efforts throughout the patrol, he succeeded in evading enemy countermeasures. His ability, courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Lieutenant Commander Bunting and the United States Naval Service.
