The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Lee Edward Bunt (NSN: 8522099), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, while serving as a Corpsman attached to the Second Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division. On 22 February 1945, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Bunt was painfully wounded in the right knee. Refusing medical aid for himself he remained with his company during a period of its heaviest fighting. In spite of the pain from his wound, he followed his platoon and repeatedly went out in the face of heavy mortar fire to attend to the wounded. On 26 February, he treated a wounded man and remained with him to assist the stretcher bearers. While returning with the stretcher team, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Bunt was wounded by enemy machine gun fire. His actions throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
