The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Hospitalman Apprentice First Class Richard L. Brown (NSN: 6167044), United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to the First Marine Raider Battalion at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 20 July 1943. He advanced under intense enemy machine gun and sniper fire to administer medical treatment and assist in the evacuation of a wounded Marine at the cost of a wound to himself. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
