The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander David Suggett Brown (NSN: 0-77175), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Gunnery and Operations Officer for Ships on the Staff of a Fast Carrier Task Group Commander during the period 10 February to 19 May 1945, while conducting operations in the Kyushu, Tokyo and the Kure Areas of the Japanese mainland and in support of the landings at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. During repeated and constant enemy air attacks in force, he displayed outstanding ability in the coordination of gunnery information between ships of the Task Group and provided necessary directives to the fighting off of these attacks. His initiative, good judgment and professional skill as a Gunnery Officer were largely responsible for the destruction by ship gunfire of many enemy planes and for saving ships of the Task Group from serious damage. His courage and inspiring leadership were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Commander David Suggett Brown (NSN: 0-77175), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Gunnery Officer, Navigator, and Operations Officer for ships of a Fast Carrier Task Group and in addition as a member of the Staff of the Commander SECOND Carrier Task Force during the period 13 April to 28 September 1944. He assisted in coordinating and correlating the many details involved in the forming of the staff of the SECOND Carrier Task Force and aided in molding that organization into a successful fighting team. By his professional skill as an ordnance expert he prepared a comprehensive schedule of training as well as an effective program of logistics for ships. His tireless efforts contributed materially to our successes in the vicinity of Wakde, in the Marianas, Carolines, and Philippines. His courageous and inspiring leadership was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Commander Brown is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
