The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign Rufus T. Brinn, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in combat as Officer in Command of the U.S. Armed Guard of the S.S. DUNBOYNE, during the early months of 1942. In the numerous engagements with enemy craft, submarines, altitude and dive bombers and intercepting destroyers, the GUNBOYNE is credited with the destruction of two enemy planes and participation in the shooting down of another. In addition, numerous enemy craft were driven off by prompt and efficient barrage. Lieutenant Brinn’s initiative, his painstaking attention to detail and outstanding leadership, exemplified in the constant vigilance of his command in the face of many and grave dangers, resulted in the successful completion of an extremely important mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
