The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Richard Eugene Bowe (NSN: 0-282877), United States Navy, for meritorious service as Torpedo and Gunnery Officer on board the U.S.S. CREVALLE (SS-291), during the SIXTH War Patrol of that Submarine in the enemy controlled waters of the East China Sea Area from 13 March to 3 May 1945. Skillfully supervising torpedo personnel and maintaining torpedo equipment, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bowe rendered valuable assistance to his Commanding Officer in sinking three hostile vessels totaling 1,250 tons, damaging one additional vessel of 167 tons and in successfully evading all enemy countermeasures. In imminent danger from aerial bombing and Japanese radar detection, he participated in a special mission and contributed materially to its successful accomplishment. His courage and devotion to duty upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bowe is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
