The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Richard Eugene Bowe (NSN: 0-282877), United States Navy, for meritorious service as Torpedo and Gunnery Officer on board the U.S.S. CREVALLE (SS-291), during the SIXTH War Patrol of that Submarine in the enemy controlled waters of the East China Sea Area from 13 March to 3 May 1945. Skillfully supervising torpedo personnel and maintaining torpedo equipment, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bowe rendered valuable assistance to his Commanding Officer in sinking three hostile vessels totaling 1,250 tons, damaging one additional vessel of 167 tons and in successfully evading all enemy countermeasures. In imminent danger from aerial bombing and Japanese radar detection, he participated in a special mission and contributed materially to its successful accomplishment. His courage and devotion to duty upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bowe is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Richard Eugene Bowe (NSN: 0-282877), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Torpedo Data Computer Operator on board the U.S.S. CREVALLE (SS-291), during the SEVENTH War Patrol of that Submarine in the enemy-controlled waters of the Japan Sea Area, from 27 May to 5 July 1945. Exercising a keen understanding of fire control equipment, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bowe rendered valuable assistance to his commanding officer in penetrating strong anti-submarine barriers to launch attacks which resulted in the sinking of three hostile freighters, one destroyer and two small craft, for a total of 8,500 tons. Continuing to render valiant service, he aided in evading severe enemy countermeasures. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bowe and the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Commander [then Ensign] Richard Eugene Bowe (NSN: 0-282877), United States Navy, for heroic service as Assistant Approach Officer and Torpedo Gunnery Officer of the U.S.S. CREVALLE (SS-291), during the FOURTH War Patrol of that vessel in enemy Japanese-controlled waters from 21 June to 9 August 1944. Working tirelessly to insure faultless performance of torpedo and gunnery equipment, Lieutenant Commander Bowe rendered valuable assistance to his Commanding Officer in carrying out four attacks against two heavily escorted enemy convoys and in sinking four Japanese ships, totaling 28,000 tons. His exceptional ability and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
