The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Carl P. Borton (NSN: 6466993), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Corpsman attached to a Rifle Company of the FOURTH Marine Division in action against the enemy on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 16 June 1944. During an attack several enemy machine guns pinned the company down in a cross fire and were producing heavy casualties. Despite this fact, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Borton worked constantly and efficiently during the entire time giving medical treatment to the casualties while under heavy and accurate enemy fire ahead of our lines, which had at that time been withdrawn approximately one hundred yards to effect a reorganization. After administering first aid treatment to casualties he obtained several captured enemy vehicles and after organizing stretcher parties from those men least seriously wounded, continued to work with the highest efficiency to evacuate all remaining casualties from the area before nightfall. His work was accomplished almost entirely ahead of our lines, under constant enemy fire, and resulted in the saving of many lives. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
