The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Harold L. Bonar (NSN: 6522176), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in operations against the enemy while serving as a Corpsman with an Anti-Tank unit attached to a Marine Battalion of the FIFTH Marine Division on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 19 February 1945. Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Bonar, without considering his own safety and peril, ran across open terrain in front of the lines, into territory which was covered by heavy and continuous machine gun and mortar fire in order to administer medical aid to six wounded men who lay helpless under heavy fire. Although fully aware of the great danger he successfully treated the wounds of the six Marines. While treating these Marines, he was hit by shrapnel in the small of the back but continued to treat the men until they were evacuated and then he received treatment for his own wound. He at all times showed cool determination and daring aggressiveness in the performance of his duties. His cool courage, great personal valor, and uncompromising devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
