The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander [then Lieutenant Commander] William Blenman (NSN: 0-77147), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. SHUBRICK (DD-268), attached to the Area Screen of the Western Naval Task Force in action against the enemy in the Bay of Seine, France, from 15 June to 4 July 1944. Charged with the responsibility of protecting vessels in the Western Task Force Area from enemy surface forces, submarines and aircraft, Commander Blenman directed his ship- in performing the task meritoriously and effectively. His initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
