The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] George Sutherland Bennett, Jr. (NSN: 0-123348), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Torpedo Data Computer Operator on board the U.S.S. SUNFISH (SS-281), during a War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy Japanese-controlled waters in World War II. Through his keen understanding of fire control equipment and proficiency in operating the torpedo data computer, Lieutenant Commander Bennett rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting successful attacks which resulted in sinking four hostile ships totaling 13,000 tons, damaging an additional 3,000-ton vessel and in evading enemy countermeasures. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
