The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Frederick W. Barrows, Jr. (NSN: 3422474), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while attached as a Corpsman to a Marine Artillery Battalion of the SECOND Marine Division, on the night of 20 – 21 June 1944. When an ammunition dump exploded and caught fire in an adjacent battalion area, Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Barrows immediately proceeded to the endangered area and rendered first aid to the wounded. During this time he was in constant danger from shell fragments which swept the area. Again on 7 July, though wounded himself, he continued to administer first aid, during an enemy counter attack, until he was again seriously wounded and evacuated. His courageous devotion to duty and utter disregard for personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
