The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Carlisle Barrickman, Jr., United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty during operations against Japanese forces on Guam from 21 July to 31 July 1944. During this period, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Barrickman served in the capacity of a Hospital Corpsman attached to a Rifle Company of the Third Battalion, Twenty-First Marines, THIRD Marine Division. On 26 July, and again on 29 July 1944, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Barrickman displayed outstanding courage and devotion to duty by advancing time and again under enemy fire to administer first aid to wounded men and assist in their evacuation to a place of safety. On 31 July 1944, the company to which Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Barrickman was attached was in assault. Again, without consideration for his own safety, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Barrickman moved out into heavy enemy rifle and machine gun fire to aid the wounded, and while so doing was hit and instantly killed. His outstanding bravery, devotion to duty, and disregard for his own personal safety aided in the saving of many lives, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
