The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Cecil Lee Bailey, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 17 February 1945, while serving aboard the U.S.S. LCI(G)-457, a close-in fire support vessel, during the pre-invasion bombardment of Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands. Under most hazardous conditions, without regard for his personal safety, by his capable performance of duty, he undoubtedly saved the lives of several of his wounded shipmates. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
