The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Charles Anthony Bader (NSN: 8615671), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 21 February 1945. Serving as a Hospital Corpsman attached to a Marine Medium Artillery Battalion, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Bader advanced under intense enemy rifle, machine gun and grenade fire to within five yards of a strongly held Japanese pillbox and rendered first aid to a mortally wounded Marine who had been injured in an attempt to destroy the installation. He then, despite the great danger to himself, remained at the scene of action and endeavored to assist in every way possible, the others who had been injured in this mission. His outstanding bravery, his complete disregard for his own safety, and his heroic devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
